Why “Go Big or Go Home” Can backfire.

I Speak Life Coaching

Hello Team,

Last time, we talked about stretch goals, the big, bold targets that push us past comfort. The response was incredible, so let’s go a layer deeper.

Here’s the twist from Duke researcher Dr. Sim Sitkin’s work, The Paradox of Stretch Goals:

“Stretch goals are most seductive for organizations that can least afford the risks.”
That line hits hard.

The truth is, stretch goals only work when the basics are strong, when your team has energy, confidence, and a little breathing room.
If you’re already running on fumes, a stretch goal won’t lift you. It’ll drain you faster.
So before you chase the impossible, check your foundation:

Momentum – Have we built small wins lately?
Capacity – Do we have room to experiment—and fail safely?
Clarity – Do we know what “good” looks like on the way there?
If you’re missing any of those, start smaller. Build rhythm, then reach.
Because a stretch goal should stretch you—not snap you.

More soon on how to set stretch goals that actually build confidence instead of fear.
